IELTS Band Score Explained: How Is IELTS Scored? (2026 Complete Guide)

Many IELTS candidates chase a band score target without fully understanding how the score is calculated — which means they focus on the wrong things in preparation. Understanding the exact mathematics of the IELTS score, what each band represents, and how close you are to your target is essential for efficient preparation. And with free AI practice feedback, you can track your criterion-level scores and watch your band improve in real time.

How IELTS Band Scores Are Calculated

IELTS reports four skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and one Overall Band Score. Each skill is scored on the 1–9 band scale in increments of 0.5.

Skill Raw Score Converted To
Listening 40 questions Band 1.0–9.0 (via conversion table)
Reading 40 questions Band 1.0–9.0 (Academic and GT have different tables)
Writing 4 criteria scored separately Average of 4 criteria → band 1.0–9.0
Speaking 4 criteria scored separately Average of 4 criteria → band 1.0–9.0

The Overall Band Score is the average of the four skill scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Example: Listening 7.5 + Reading 6.5 + Writing 6.0 + Speaking 7.0 = 27.0 ÷ 4 = 6.75 → rounded to Band 7.0

How to Calculate the Band Score You Need

Work backwards from your target: if your target is Overall Band 7.0 and your Listening and Reading are already at 7.5, your Writing and Speaking average needs to be 6.5 to reach the overall target of 7.0. This means even a Writing 6.0 with Speaking 7.0 gets you there.

Use this formula to identify your minimum Writing + Speaking target:

Required W+S average = (Target Overall × 4) − Listening − Reading

Example: Target 7.0, Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0
= (7.0 × 4) − 7.5 − 7.0 = 28 − 14.5 = 13.5 → W+S average = 6.75 → each needs ~6.5–7.0

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I retake only one section of IELTS?

With IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR), you can retake one of the four skills within 60 days of your original test date, if your overall band score meets your requirements but one skill score is too low. This option is available for computer-delivered IELTS at participating centres.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

IELTS test results are valid for 2 years from the test date. After 2 years, the score is no longer accepted by most institutions and authorities. If your result expires before you use it, you must retake the test.

Can I appeal my IELTS score?

Yes — you can request an Enquiry on Results (EOR) for Writing and/or Speaking within 6 weeks of your test date. Your scripts are re-marked by a different senior examiner. The fee is refunded if your score changes. Listening and Reading are not eligible for EOR as they are objectively marked.
