IELTS Speaking Part 1: Questions, Strategies & Band 7+ Answers (2026)
IELTS Speaking Part 1 is the section most candidates under-prepare for — because it seems easy. It is not scored separately, but your Part 1 performance sets the tone for the entire 14-minute test. A hesitant, low-vocabulary Part 1 creates an impression that is difficult to reverse in Parts 2 and 3. A fluent, confident Part 1 puts both you and the examiner at ease — and that matters.
This guide covers every common topic, the exact structure of high-scoring answers, and how to use our free AI feedback tool to build the automaticity that makes Part 1 effortless.
What Is IELTS Speaking Part 1?
- Duration: 4–5 minutes
- Format: 3 topic areas, 3–4 questions each
- Always starts with: home/accommodation, hometown, work/studies
- Then moves to 1–2 more topic areas (hobbies, food, travel, technology, etc.)
- Expected answer length: 2–4 sentences per question
- Assessed on: same 4 criteria as Parts 2 and 3

The 2-3-2 Answer Formula for Band 7+
Every Part 1 answer should follow this structure:
- 2 seconds: Breathe and give a direct answer to the question
- 3 sentences: Extend with a reason, example, or contrast
- 2 seconds: Natural close (don’t trail off)
Question: “Do you enjoy cooking?”
Band 5 answer: “Yes, I like cooking sometimes.” (6 words — insufficient)
Band 7+ answer: “I do, yes — though I wouldn’t call myself a passionate cook. I mainly enjoy it at weekends when I have more time, and I’ve recently started experimenting with North African flavours. It’s quite therapeutic actually.” (3 natural sentences, specific detail, engaging)
Part 1 Vocabulary Upgrades by Topic
| Topic | Basic Phrase | Band 7+ Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Hometown | “It is a nice city” | “It is a fairly vibrant mid-sized city with a lot going on culturally” |
| Food | “I like spicy food” | “I have a particular weakness for heavily spiced dishes — North African tagines, for example” |
| Technology | “I use my phone a lot” | “I am on my phone constantly — probably more than I should be” |
| Free time | “I like watching films” | “I tend to gravitate towards documentary films — particularly on social or environmental themes” |
| Travel | “I like travelling” | “I jump at any opportunity to travel — there is something irreplaceable about experiencing a place in person” |
The Biggest Part 1 Mistakes
| Mistake | Why It Loses Marks | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| One-word answers | Scores near zero for Fluency & Cohesion | Always give at least 2 sentences with a reason |
| Memorised scripted answers | Examiner detects and changes topic mid-answer | Learn frameworks and vocabulary, not full scripts |
| Speaking too fast from nerves | Pronunciation and clarity suffer | Consciously slow to 80% of natural speed |
| Answering a different question | Loses Task Achievement marks | Pause, listen to the full question, then answer |
| Ending answers with “…yeah” | Signals hesitancy; sounds unfinished | Practise natural closers: “…so I genuinely enjoy it.” |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask the examiner to repeat a question in Part 1?
Yes — “Could you repeat that, please?” or “Sorry, could you say that again?” are perfectly acceptable. Using this phrase once or twice will not affect your score. However, asking for repetition repeatedly on simple questions may suggest comprehension difficulties.
Should I answer personally or can I make things up?
You can answer personally or invent details — examiners do not verify facts. If your real answer is very short (e.g., “I don’t really have hobbies”), it is better to elaborate on something you find interesting, even partially fictional, to demonstrate your language range.
How long should Part 1 answers be?
2–4 sentences (20–40 seconds). Part 1 is a warm-up — you do not need to give the extended AREA-style answers required in Part 3. Longer answers in Part 1 waste time and may actually feel unnatural.
